Helen Opie has spent the past 15 years working all over the world in her role organising business events and international summits. But now she is swapping conferences for cleaning as she launches her own domestic homecare business, Bright & Beautiful which will be creating a number of jobs for local women and men in Surrey.
Helen, who lives in Banstead with her partner Jovan and their one-year old son, will be managing a team of housekeepers to deliver ethical, professional and eco-friendly cleaning, tidying and laundry services using only non-toxic and eco-friendly cleaning products and equipment.
Bright & Beautiful is a world away from Helen’s previous career which saw her managing major high profile international conferences and summits across the world, from Singapore to Sweden, working with heads of state, foreign ministers, high-level diplomats and the world’s media.
After having her little boy Helen wanted to find a new way of working that wouldn’t take her away from her family so decided to set up her own housekeeping business that would allow her to have a career that was both flexible and family friendly. Now she will also be creating a number of jobs for other women and men who want to have a career but not at the expense of family life.
"Starting my own Bright & Beautiful business and being able to offer a professional and eco-friendly housekeeping service to local people in Banstead has been a huge turning point in my life. Like many women, when we started a family I was still very ambitious but wanted to find a path that allowed me to enjoy my work and home life equally. The ethos behind Bright & Beautiful is all about empowering women – housekeepers, clients and the charities we support in the UK and overseas – so it is great to be able to work with like-minded women locally.
A million more people are now using cleaners than a decade ago, thanks to our increasingly busy lives, and I knew there was a real gap in the market for an eco-friendly and ethical professional housekeeping service in Banstead."
Earlier this year Helen was awarded a £1,000 Business Support Grant from Reigate and Banstead Borough Council to assist with some of her start-up equipment costs. The Grant is one of a number of initiatives undertaken by the council to support local businesses and encourage a vibrant local economy.
Bright & Beautiful is an award-winning business model that was founded by entrepreneur Rachel Ray in 2007. A busy working mum herself, Rachel spotted a gap in the market for a domestic cleaning company that provided full fair employment rights for its team, non-toxic cleaning products and an exceptional housekeeping service for its clients. Since then the business has grown from strength to strength with franchisees around the UK employing carefully vetted professional housekeepers and servicing thousands of clients.
