Vicki Weinberg talks about her decision to start her Tatty Bumpkin business in Sevenoaks in March 2014.

Tatty Bumpkin - Vicki WeinbergMy background is in employee communications and change management and I was working for a global organisation in London when I fell pregnant with my son.

As the end of my maternity leave came closer, the idea of leaving him for long days while I commuted to London wasn’t appealing. I’d always wanted to work for myself, but never had the courage to start something on my own, and wasn’t even sure what it was I wanted to do. I started looking into franchising as an option, as I loved the idea of running my own business, yet having a support network behind me.

When I heard about Tatty Bumpkin I attended a discovery day where I got to see a class and find out more about the business. I got really excited about my potential new venture! I’d attended a lot of classes with my son and felt that Tatty Bumpkin was so different from anything I’d seen before. I fell in love with the original music, the story-based classes and the opportunity to use my imagination and creative side to bring the adventures to life!

Researching the area and writing a business plan felt daunting, but once I’d pushed myself to do that I started to believe that anything was possible.

I’ve been running Tatty Bumpkin Sevenoaks since March 2014 and while it is hard work, it has also been so much fun and very rewarding. The business has grown over the first year and I had enough work to take on my first teacher a few months ago, which felt like a big milestone. I work part-time and feel I have a really good work/life balance, which was always the goal.

I get to meet lovely people, go on exciting adventures with the children and have so much fun. There aren’t many jobs where you get to hop around like rabbits, or crawl like spiders! I really enjoy seeing how much fun the children have and it’s fantastic to watch them develop.

The support you receive from head office and the other franchisees is amazing. We have a lovely community and you never feel alone. There is always someone who’s been through a similar experience and can help you out. I love being part of it and would recommend taking on a franchise, or teaching, to anyone who loves working with children and is looking to do something fun and rewarding.
