Teachers use their skills to launch business as report reveals half are considering leaving the profession.
A recent report in a national newspaper reveals that more than half of teachers are considering leaving the profession in the next two years.
The research from a YouGov poll reveals that 53% of teachers are thinking of leaving because of the sheer volume of workload and to seek a better work/life balance.
Razzamataz Theatre Schools, a part-time performing arts school franchise business is proud to have a number of franchisees who are either former teachers or combining part-time teaching with being a Razzamataz franchisee.
"The skills that teachers have are ideal to be a Principal of a Razzamataz school," explains Denise Hutton-Gosney, MD and Founder of Razzamataz. "However, what is lacking in many is business knowledge which is where we offer invaluable experience, support and on-going training."
Lyndsey was a full time teacher and it was on a holiday to Tunisia where she first got the idea of changing careers. "My daughter attended the Razzamataz summer holiday club at the First Choice Holiday we were at," explains Lyndsey.
Although Lyndsey doesn’t have a background in performing, she taught dance, singing and drama as part of the curriculum at school and also put on end of term shows.
Once she learned more about what Razzamataz could offer, she was very eager to explore the options and was keen to have the flexibility that becoming a franchisee could offer to allow her to spend more time with her family.
"The skills I have as a teacher including organisation, experience of working with children, dealing with parents and lesson planning have been a great help running a theatre school," says Lyndsey. "But I needed help with business management. The support manager is only a call away if you need advice and the other franchisees are very helpful."
Since launching her own business, she has reduced her teaching hours to two days a week in school and one day working from home.
"I am able to combine these roles by being very organised, setting clear boundaries and achievable goals for staff and students and myself and staying on top of paperwork," explains Deborah. "These are all skills that I have mastered through my teaching career."
Deborah believes that teachers have many transferable skills that can lead them to a change of career if they choose. "I am able to work without being directed and I am able to meet deadlines," she explains. "I am completely comfortable dealing with children of all ages and I know how to motivate them. I have run my own faculty for 15 years so I am used to working at management level. I also have good people management skills, which helps when dealing with parents and suppliers."
Claire has actually used her skills as a Razzamataz Principal to inspire her to join the teaching profession.
"I opened my school aged 21 so I did my teaching training while being the Principal of Razzamataz," explains Claire. "I now run a theatre school alongside my new career. The skills I took from Razzamataz prepared me for all aspects of being a teacher, notably working with students and other staff members and I find I know how to effectively communicate with people of all ages."
Claire is an English and Drama teacher in a secondary school. She ensures she spend a couple of hours each day catching up on emails and calls but also uses her time effectively during Razzamataz sessions and during school holidays. "You need to work SMART and be realistic about what you can manage. It's about a balance," Claire adds.
