300 People Launch Their Own Businesses During Credit Crunch

"In many ways, the credit crunch has been great for us.” - Nigel Botterill, My Little Wrapper

In March 2008 entrepreneur Nigel Botterill launched a business in a box that he thought would interest a handful of work-from-home Mums. Eight months later, Botterill has sold over 300 ‘My Little Wrapper’ businesses, and he’s putting the huge demand down to the credit crunch.

Entrepreneur Nigel said “we thought it would be a fun sideline to our more established brands, but the rapid growth of My Little Wrapper has taken us completely by surprise. We’ve been selling about 10 a week for months now and had to restructure our business to cope with the demand. In many ways, the credit crunch has been great for us.”

My Little Wrapper is designed for Mums who want to work from home on something that fits around their family life. The business involves selling personalised chocolate bars for family events like birthday parties and weddings, company promotion and charity fundraising.

My Little Wrapper is one of the cheapest business-in-a-box opportunities available, so that helps to explain its appeal, but priced at £2000 it still represents a significant commitment, especially in these financially turbulent times.

Nigel said “we supply the chocolate bars and wrappers, which means we know exactly how well the business is working for people. We’ve sold over 100,000 chocolate bars already, so there’s clearly huge demand for these personalised bars that our growing network is just starting to tap in to.”

“We’ve delivered over 30,000 Christmas wrappers to our network in the last 3 weeks, so lots of people are going to be eating personalised chocolate during the festive season.” Nigel added “we think that some of this demand is down to people tightening their belts and sending chocolate bars as gifts, rather than more expensive presents.”

The price of My Little Wrapper chocolate bars depends on the number ordered, but is typically around £15 for ten fully personalised bars.

With fellow entrepreneurs James Caan, Levi Roots and Rachel Elnaugh, Nigel will be revealing the secrets of business success later this month at the Business Startup event at London’s Olympia. He’s taking to the stage at 1.30pm on Friday 28th.
