La Jolie Ronde address fall in GCSE Languages

"We are currently working with a number of secondary language colleges who have asked for help in encouraging their feeder primaries to adopt a consistent teaching method for those pupils learning a modern foreign language” - Mala Henry, La Jolie Ronde

Recent GCSE results highlighted a marked fall in languages being chosen for study with French down by 6.8 per cent on last year and German dropped by 5.4 per cent. Spanish entries however were up by 4.9 per cent.

La Jolie Ronde has been teaching primary children French for over 25 years and more recently saw the introduction of their award-winning course in Spanish. La Jolie Ronde’s belief is that learning another language comes easy to the very young as they have a keen ear and are extremely receptive. The strategies and language learning skills which they use for developing their own language, are very active therefore it is the ideal time to familiarise them with sounds and patterns of a new language.

Their aim has always been to encourage this age group to gain a love of languages so they want to continue their studies at secondary school.

There does however seem to be more work needed to encourage these pupils to continue with their language learning at secondary and improve the transition from KS2 to KS3. With the Government’s 2010 Modern Foreign Language Framework deadline looming, the teaching of foreign languages will made available for all Key Stage 2 children in England and Wales. This makes the teaching of foreign languages a high priority for teachers and schools.

Marketing Co-Ordinator Mala Henry, says, “La Jolie Ronde are addressing this in many ways. Primary schools are looking for a solution to enable them to teach a modern foreign language to their pupils. La Jolie Ronde’s KS2 French and Spanish Schemes of Work provide the ideal and complete solution for non-specialist teachers, we also offer full training courses that provide hands-on, practical help to demonstrate some of the activities included in the Schemes. We are currently working with a number of secondary language colleges who have asked for help in encouraging their feeder primaries to adopt a consistent teaching method for those pupils learning a modern foreign language”.

She added "This year also saw La Jolie Ronde team up with, children’s books publisher Scholastic, to launch the first 'Primary Language Teacher of the Year Award'. The Award developed from a shared desire to recognise and celebrate the very best in language teaching taking place in UK primary schools. Four finalists have been chosen and the winner will be announced at an Awards Ceremony at the House of Commons on 9 October 2008".
