Tom and Fran Maclean, business partners and husband and wife, are celebrating their achievement of running their own Pitman Training businesses for a landmark 30 years.
Opening their flagship Pitman Training Centre in 1987, their business based in Castle Street, Edinburgh, was conducted using manual typewriters, with a move in 1988 to their High Street premises saw the first Pitman Training centre outside of the London area embrace the electronic age, with the use of electronic typewriters, followed by their most recent move to their current premises in York Place.
Supporting individuals across Scotland embarking on vocational training to help them get a job, or for those wanting to progress their career, Tom and Fran’s team has evolved from teaching the historically renowned Pitman shorthand and secretarial courses, to offering learning programmes geared towards a wide variety of modern office based roles seen in any modern workplace. The couple’s unique approach to their own business has also been progressive, having readily embraced new technology that provides e-testing, online learning and digital marketing.
Pitman Training in Scotland not only assists private individuals to achieve their career goals but has also forged good relationships with hundreds of businesses, of all sizes, to provide their staff training, benefitted by the recent accreditation of the majority of their courses by the Continual Professional Development (CPD) Standards Office.
The excellent team work between Tom and Fran has helped them consistently accomplish a turnover in excess of £1 million per year from their two Pitman Training Centres based in Glasgow and Edinburgh and provide support to the other Scotland based franchised training centres. Providing employment for 17 staff and having built the business from the ground up, the dedicated pair are an inspiration to others in the franchise network, and is business as a whole.

Claire Lister, the Managing Director of Pitman Training Group said:
"We’re delighted to celebrate Tom and Fran’s success as they make such a prominent contribution to the network and business as a whole, in addition to having built up a great business in Scotland. Their business expertise, dedication as well as support from their family and staff are all fundamental elements that have motivated them both. We are extremely proud to have them on board."
Fran Maclean said:
"The Pitman brand has been trusted for generations and it’s fantastic to be able to still work within this British heritage brand that’s moving with the times. It has been imperative to have an open mind to developments within the business and to adjust to these and allow yourself flexibility as I think is one of our secrets to both mine and Tom’s success over the last 30 years and something I would recommend all business owners embrace."
