All hotels have to spend money to do business. However with the credit crunch and world economic downturn, it is even more vital that spends on essential services like communications, energy, water, and waste management is managed effectively.
Although organisations are aware of the need to control their costs, many still struggle to achieve meaningful savings because they lack the time and resources to drive cost reduction programmes. Accountants KPMG concluded recently: “Businesses are under constant pressure to reduce costs, yet many find it hard to do so in a sustainable fashion. Nine out of 10 programmes fail to achieve their targets and the gains that are achieved appear to be short-lived.”
Management usually focuses on the headline prices of their essential overheads, assuming these equate to the total cost. Not so. Just because a supplier offers you a low price it doesn’t mean you will make meaningful, long-term savings. After all, how do you know if it’s the best price? What if their prices go up next month and you’re tied into a long-term contract? Will they apply minimum charges that push your costs up rather than down? Do you have time to constantly monitor your prices and check your bills?
Cost and purchase management specialists Auditel, suggest: “Those in the know are already making savings by employing the expertise of organisations that have the experience and time to obtain results. By so doing, they can access specialist knowledge, mitigate the financial loss of taking key individuals away from their core responsibilities and eliminate the costs of employing in-house resources.”
Auditel is helping hotel management to achieve major successes. Recent savings range from 33% on electricity, 29% on communications, 27% on gas, 14% on water and 15% on waste, to rebates of 18% and savings of 11% on sewerage.
At least one hotel has plugged their leaks. In checking a huge water usage, the consultant estimated a daily requirement of 3.4 cubic metres. The readings showed 30 cubic metres! Sure enough there was a leak. As the owner said: ‘He has quite literally stopped the profit leaking out of our business!”
