Michael French hit break-even point after just one term in the incredibly competitive city of London in May 2012.

Razzamataz Barnet - Michael FrenchMichael has been a successful performer in many West End shows and has danced with the likes of Elton John, George Michael, Geri Halliwell and Michael Buble.

Q. What do you think are the main reasons for your success?

I believe breaking even during the beginning of my second term has come through following the Razzamataz franchise method. We had a very thorough training back in January 2012. Without this vital process I wouldn't have been heading in the right direction. That along with my passion for performing arts has definitely helped. I have a great team of teachers, which helps towards the pupil's enjoyment of the classes, which it turn leads them to recommend Razz to friends and class mates.

Q. What advice can you offer other would-be franchisees?

You must follow the methods and ideas of that brand. That is the whole point of becoming a franchisee. The knowledge and the tried and tested methods are the reasons for joining a franchise network.

Q. What has been the biggest lesson you have learnt?

If you think you can take work easy then business is not for you. You have to be prepared to go over and above what you think is the right amount of work. Also the office phone is always open. I have had people call me at 8am on a Sunday morning before!!!

Q. How should new franchisees approach launch day?

Follow your marketing plan and make even more time available than you think is required. Things will pop up that you will not expect. Plan everything to the finest detail and be prepared for the unexpected.

Q. What are your plans for the future?

We have our very first summer production to plan for next year. This shall take a lot of planning and the execution with be a massive learning curve for myself and my team. Otherwise I plan to end the school year with a full school. From there I shall be looking into opening my second school.

Q. London is an incredibly tough market with lots of competition, what practical steps have you taken to reach break even point?

Opening in London has been tough. I could reel off a list of competitors within a stone’s throw away from my school! I think believing in yourself, the brand and your team pays dividends when in such a hostile environment. We have attended three local fetes so far and we have an exciting Christmas fete to attend later in the year. Keeping the brand current and in the public's mind have definitely helped us. We actually attended a festival in August where all of our competition had stalls around us. Instead of being boring and just having a stand and bombarding people with information, we were offering free glitter tattoos! This really did bring in the public and capture their imagination of what a young, fresh and funky brand we are.
